College of Education
Christ-Centered Educators
As a teacher, you pass on the knowledge and values of our culture, from the mathematics that governs physics to a lens to study great literature. To become an effective educator, you must master both knowledge and teaching strategies so all students can learn. And while creating a safe, supportive, learning community, you also need to coach students to become critical thinkers and life-long learners.
COE Philosophy
The College of Education, referred to as the “unit,” focuses on the intellectual development of the student, while being attentive to the ideals of character, servant leadership, and cultural engagement. A holistic Christian approach also requires the college to give attention to other aspects of the student’s total development by providing opportunities for physical, social, and spiritual growth.
The Greatest Teacher of All
Sure, you can prepare to be a teacher at other universities, but at AU you'll be encouraged to emulate the greatest teacher of all: Jesus Christ. With Him as the model, we teach you pedagogy as well as how to cultivate the patient, caring heart you'll need to inspire students.
Early Field Experiences
In addition to our emphasis on bringing Christian caring into the classroom, our undergraduate and graduate programs expose you to the perfect mix of education theory and practice. Within the first year of our bachelor's degree programs, students observe veteran educators teaching and planning in public schools.
Your Future and Licensure
A school district superintendent, principals, and veteran, award-winning teachers are among our hundreds of education grads. Accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), we offer the bachelor's degrees that lead to initial teacher licensure through the South Carolina State Department of Education.

The College of Education is committed to preparing our candidates to be builders of knowledge, values, and community, so they are equipped to change the world, one student at a time.
